April fool’s mood

Friendly reminder-

I don’t suffer fools gladly on any day, doubly so on April 1.

No “practical jokes”, please. Not now. Something fun and funny that doesn’t hurt anyone, fine. Hurt someone’s feelings or scare people, or just lie about something very concerning to folks… Well, that firecracker is going to blow a few of your own fingers off, at the very least.

Keep it friendly, goofy and fun.

Don’t be mean. Now isn’t the time to be a dick.

Firefox assist

Hey by the way while I’m thinking about it I’ve settled into a collection of extensions I really like for FireFox and I thought I’d share.

Auto tab discard – “discard” is the wrong word, don’t let this scare you off; this pauses background tabs so they’re not constantly running scripts or refreshing and eating up memory. You can set how long you want it to be before it “discards” (pauses) the tab, you can set certain tabs to not discard, you can tell it to not discard tabs with media playing; 100/10, HUGE HUGE speed and functionality improvements to my browser/system with this extension – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/auto-tab-discard/

UblockOrigin – adblocker – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

Mind the Time – tracks how long you’ve spent on the pages you’re on (so I can see that I’ve spent four hours and sixteen minutes on tumblr today and reassess my life) (i like the IDEA of productivity apps that prevent me from getting on sites I spend too much time on but if my computer ever tries to tell me what to do I get immediately fighty so this is just a mindfulness thing) – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mind-the-time/

Multi Account Containers – VERY GOOD LIFECHANGING PERFECT EXTENSION; opens tabs in isolation so you can log in as different users in the same window without logging out. Basically I can be logged into multiple gmail/tumblr/amazon accounts without having to open private windows and that’s Very Nice – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Facebook Container – keeps FB from tracking you all over the place and isolates it into its own little biohazard container and good riddance – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/facebook-container/

Privacy Badger – EFF tool for blocking trackers – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/privacy-badger17/

HTTPS everywhere – forces HTTPS connections everywhere they’re supported – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/https-everywhere/

Decentraleyes – blocks tracking from centralized content delivery hubs (google, yandex, etc.) – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/decentraleyes/

Types of stard

  • Mu
  • Ba

this is oddly close to real

‘ard’ is a real suffix in the english language just like ‘ly’ or ‘ify’, it just isnt common enough for us to notice its usage. ‘ard’ means ‘too much’ or ‘too easily’

so ‘mustard’ is something that is ‘too pungent’, just as ‘wizard’ is someone who is too wise, ‘coward’ is someone too easily cowed, and ‘drunkard’ is someone too often drunk

Self quarantine day 18

BREAKING NEWS: Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has put the state under a stay-at-home order as coronavirus cases surpass 1,400.
It goes into effect at 8PM MONDAY NIGHT. Will be enforced with violators facing misdemeanor charges.
NO MARYLAND RESIDENT should leave their home unless for essential job or essential reason (food, medicine, etc).

Fair enough. DC and VA should follow soon, if they haven’t already.

Thankful to delivery people for replenishment of supplies.

2 weeks in, so far.

March 12 was my first full day of self quarantine.

I really haven’t gone anywhere outside of my home block for 14 days, and it is a little surreal.

I am thankful for modern conveniences, like streaming games and TV. I still haven’t assembled my 3d printer or made solid progress in straightening my office past the first major foray. I think that part of my reasoning is because of dust and concern for my lungs, but also likely pure ptsd/anxiety about major projects, and realizing that is giving me counter-stress about not doing it.

Pyewacket seems to be enjoying having his mama and papa here full time.

Sleep has been difficult. Mr. Man has been spoiled by us getting up to entertain/feed/follow him around if he wails loudly enough at 4am.

Feeling a little bit better

I talked to DC for about 80min+ on the phone, and now feel better about his level of fair skepticism regarding JC and colloidal silver.

I will count that as a win, even if he is a bit irrational about vitamin c and organic food. That shit won’t hurt him, except maybe financially.

Fears about ignorance might make life bad and short for me and the ones I love. Worries about triage and respirators, since I would be tossed on the sacrifice pile should it come to that. Probably my wife and inlaws, too.

Herd immunity does not apply right now.

We discussed COVID-19 of course, focusing on decontamination, but also caught up in general. His and J’s health, my family, gaming, his work and ours. Telecommuting via google classroom to teach senior high school students math.

How current students are very different than those 15-20 years ago. Phone dependance, nobody does homework assigned (his school does not grade homework?), kids being far more tolerant of different skin colors and sexuality than when he started. Lack of religious interest (he is at a secular private school now).

We spoke a little about Glyos, artificial intelligence gaining sentience, if some baseline humans are less “sentient” and how to judge that in a machine.

TV shows like humans, the tick, DEVS came to mind. Also other Amazon prime shows.

How am I doing?

Fearful for my family’s health. Wife and I have autoimmune issues, as do her parents. We are not far from DC, and there are a number if people not playing smart.

I feel we are doing our best to be isolated, I am frightened, because all of us are likely to be triaged to the “no respirator” zone, or worse a death sentence should we need that level of care.

That, bundled with the huge level of mismanagement at the very top is creating terror.

That said, I feel fortunate that we have the resources available to hole up in our house in a relatively rural area for the time being. We have food, internet, medicines for the time being. We have each other, and that counts for a lot.

What is that?

My first reaction to hearing Imagine being sung by dumbasses.

Dear celebrities singing Imagine… I generally like the song, but it is way off the mark for the current situation. I mean really tone deaf.

If somebody, somewhere is getting comfort from religion right now, maybe don’t crap all over that, even if you don’t. Save it for later, when everyone is on more even footing. Don’t punch down on poor folks who have literally nothing but faith to fall back on.

I think that is simply not useful right now. Just drop some of your stacks of cash on the problem, huh?

If you must, maybe stomp on specific problems like some religious (or not) leaders being vile, manipulative SOB’s by having huge mansions while there is a homeless population in real trouble, or those profiteering from a disaster by funneling resources into non-medical solutions or selling snake oil? There are plenty of people both secular and not aiding the spread of mess.

Better yet, Be a helper. Help fund resources that do good works. Stay at home and share videos of your pets, or you encouraging folks to do the same.

At the very least… don’t be a dick if you can avoid it.

More local covid19 info

A MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR LARRY HOGAN: The State of Maryland now has 580 confirmed cases of #COVID19—an increase of 157 new cases, which is by far the largest one-day increase to date. There are more than 1,200 confirmed cases in the National Capital Region—in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia.

So this happened up the road…

CALVERT COUNTY HEALTH DEPT/CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: An extremely unusual situation has developed over the past five days. The Calvert Health Department has always been truthful with the information we provide. In the interest of transparency, we are notifying you of the following events that have occurred in relation to the 7-11 on Hallowing Point Road.

On March 21st, a person connected to the store was tested for coronavirus. This individual falsified a positive result, leading to a temporary store closure and a swirl of social media conjecture. The result from this test is still pending. The lab to which it was sent to has a current wait time of nearly 10 days. In other words, at the present time it is not know whether that person does or does not have coronavirus.

Before it was realized that the initial report was falsified, another person who works at the store was tested by their family doctor. This test went to a different lab with a much faster turnaround time. That test was reported today did show coronavirus.

Given the very unexpected turn of events, both the store owner and the 7-11 corporation have decided that it’s in the best interest of public health to close the store on Hallowing Point Road and another Calvert store, under the same ownership, located in Prince Frederick. These stores will stay closed for 14 days as per CDC guidance to prevent transmission.

The situation was discussed with the Director of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Maryland Department of Health who agreed with the decision.

Employees are being contacted individually to provide appropriate health precautions. Given the limited amount of direct contact most customers have in a convenience store, the potential for customers to have acquired coronavirus in either store is very low. However, customers who entered either store between March 12th-25th are advised to contact their personal health care provider if they develop any respiratory symptoms or fevers. For those who have no symptoms, over the next two weeks, they should take additional precautions of washing their hands frequently and they may want to avoid contact with people over age 60 and people of any age with weakened immune systems.

The Calvert Health Department will continue to monitor employees’ health over the next 14 days and provide updates if new information becomes available.

Walkies this morning. Looks like spring buds are starting to peek out along with pollen. Nice to pump blood through my system with a little fresh air, however full of yellow spores. No squirrels on my path, but I did see an eagle and a rabbit. (I wonder if they will intersect later? For Mr. Bun’s sake, I hope not.)

Svalbard global seed vault

built five hundred feet into the permafrost of a norwegian island located some six hundred miles from the north pole (and twice that from oslo), the svalbard global seed vault is the world’s largest and most secure seed bank.

safe from earthquake and flooding, and designed to last a thousand years, its mission is to serve as a backup for planet’s agriculture in the event of a catastrophe, be it from drought, floods, disease, war (see: syria) and/or the slow moving disaster of climate change.

known as the doomsday vault, it has amassed over 840,000 seed samples since the first deposit, that of rice seeds, was made in 2008 by the late kenyan environmental activist and nobel peace prize winner, wangari maathai.

since then, all countries, save japan and china (the later of which is believed to have already lost 90 percent of its rice varieties) have entrusted the site with their agricultural heritage, and the collection, as of now, covers about half of the world’s known crop diversity.

if I had a crush on a building or piece of architecture it’s the svalbard seed vault for sure
